Specialist Surgery Services for cats and dogs

At Oxford Veterinary Specialists, we provide expert care for your pet. If you would like your pet to be referred to us, please contact your regular vet who will discuss the next steps with our team. We will then be in touch to arrange an appointment as appropriate.

Why choose OVS

Our clinic is led by Hannes Bergmann, Specialist in Small Animal Surgery, allowing you confidence that, when referral is required, your pet will be assisted by the most qualified person possible. Specialist status is the highest level of recognition of expertise that can be attained in clinical veterinary work.

What is a Specialist?

A Veterinary Specialist is a qualified vet who has undergone significant further training to achieve the highest clinical accolade in our profession. To use the term Specialist, a vet must be recognised by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) or the European Board of Veterinary Specialists (EBVS).

Referral process

Once we have received a referral request for your pet from your local practice, we will contact you to arrange the most convenient appointment for you. We will send all necessary information out to you ahead of your appointment so that you have time to read through the information.
Your initial consultation with the Specialist will allow plenty of time for a thorough discussion surrounding your pet’s condition and treatment options. Although we will not always know if your pet requires surgery until they have been assessed, we are usually able to perform further investigations and treatment on the same day if necessary.

What we do

Oxford Veterinary Specialists is an independent veterinary referral centre led by RCVS and European Specialist in Small Animal Surgery, Hannes Bergmann.  We deal with injuries or diseases affecting the bones, joints, muscles and ligaments in cats and dogs. We pride ourselves on our caring nature not only to our patient but also to their owners. We are also specialised in a very wide range of Soft Tissue Surgery cases in both dogs and cats, mainly concerning the head and neck, airway, chest and abdomen. Surgical management of cancer is also commonly performed.

What to expect

Our team of experienced and qualified experts are always on-hand to ensure your pet receives the best possible treatment and support. We understand that pet owners want to be kept informed and involved in their pet’s care, and we go the extra mile to ensure you are part of the process. Our team are friendly, reliable and approachable, and will always make sure you feel comfortable and supported.

Aftercare

Once the surgery is finished, you will receive a phone call from our team to inform you about the procedure that your pet has just undergone. From there, we will move your pet to aftercare and you will receive updates on their progress as they regain consciousness and begin the recovery process. These time frames will differ depending on the size of your pet and the nature of the procedure. We will give you some indication of when you can expect your next update. Once your pet returns home we’ll give you specific instructions for the next stages of recovery, at home.
